Workshop on Future Vision of Diabetes Strategy

The Supreme Council of Health organized a workshop on Thursday 19 February 2015 on determining the future vision of National Diabetes Strategy. Many authorities participated in the workshop including Hamad Medical Corporation, Primary Health Care Corporation, National Health Insurance Company SEHA, Sidra, Qatar University, Weill Cornell University, Calgary University, Medical Services of the Ministry of Interior and Civil Defence, Supreme Education Council, Qatar Diabetes Society, “Let’s Work Against Diabetes” Initiative, Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Bio Bank Research Institute, members of National Diabetes Committee as well as international experts in diabetes prevention.

Dr. Al-Anoud bint Mohammad Al-Thani, SCH Director of Health Promotion and non-Communicable Diseases stated during her speech that the future vision of the National Diabetes Strategy will use clear awareness activities for the citizens and residents of the State of Qatar through enabling patients follow up their treatment plans and make decisions based on complete information about Diabetes and the health services provided for them.

Prof. Abdulbadi Abu Samra, HMC Head of Internal Medicine and Director of Diabetes and Obesity Metabolism said that the future vision of the National Diabetes Strategy will be based on information integration and connection among all health providers in the State of Qatar, which will be reflected positively on providing unique health services and using technology to facilitate the process of carrying medical research to develop the health services delivered to diabetes patients in the State of Qatar.

Prof. Steven Coligiuri, Boden Institute Director in Sydney University pointed out the efforts of the State of Qatar in preparing a national diabetes strategy based on the scientific approach in future health planning.

Prof. Desmond Jonston, Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes Department, Medicine College, Imperial University, London, mentioned that patients’ involvement in developing the their respective strategy which will be completed in the near future by the meetings and workshops which will be carried out to survey the patients’ opinions regarding their needs and requirements which they wish to include in the National Diabetes Strategy.

The Diabetes National Committee was established in 2013 and it includes physicians and experts from health and academic institutions in the State of Qatar. The Committee is chaired by Dr. Al-Anoud bint Mohammad Al-Thani, Director of Health Promotion and Non-Communicable Diseases and Professor Abdulbadi Abu Samra, HMC Head of Internal Medicine and Director of Diabetes and Obesity Metabolism.
