Where Is The Ebola Virus Outbreak? Updated Map Of Ebola Virus Outbreak As Death Toll Tops 2,000
The outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa has now claimed more than 2,000 lives. The World Health Organization (WHO) released an Ebola Response Roadmap Friday that puts the death toll at 2,097 out of 3,944 cases.
Liberia, the most affected country, reported 200 new cases a week for the past three weeks. One person tested positive for the virus in Senegal, which furthered the international community’s fears of the spreading epidemic.
The West Africa outbreak does not include cases from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which is experiencing an unconnected outbreak of the virus. Fully 53 cases and 31 deaths have been confirmed in the DRC as of Aug. 26.
There are only nine diagnostic laboratories in WHO’s Emerging and Dangerous Pathogens Laboratory Network (EDPLN) equipped for Ebola or Marburg virus diagnostics, America’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Germany’s Bernhard-Nocht-Institut für Tropenmedizin and South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases.

WHO Emerging and Dangerous Pathogens Laboratory Network (EDPLN) are GOARN response partners and expert scientists providing evidence-based strategies, tools and practices for rapid detection and containment of outbreaks of novel, emerging and dangerous pathogens in order to minimize their impact on public health, health systems and economies of affected areas.
